LG Washer CL Code: Child Lock Is On (How to Turn It Off)
What the code means
LG's US washer error-code list says CL is not an error code but an indicator that the child lock feature is active: the control panel is disabled and settings can't be changed. LG's front-load Child Lock article explains it's a safety feature that locks the control panel during a cycle so a child or another person can't change it, that all buttons except Power stop working, and that it is not automatically turned off when the cycle finishes. LG also notes the lock stays on when the washer is powered off and back on, so unplugging won't clear it, and the washer won't start a new cycle until it's turned off. During a running cycle with the lock on, some models alternate CL with the time remaining. Which button controls the lock depends on the model: a dedicated Child Lock or Control Lock button, or two buttons with a lock symbol pressed together (LG's examples include Temp + Rinse, holding Spin on models marked *Child Lock, holding Steam on Steam models, Spin on the WashTower washer panel, and Pre Wash or Tub Clean on some older models). Your owner's manual names the exact buttons.
Likely causes
- Child Lock was turned on on purpose, or by accident by holding the lock button or the two lock-marked buttons for about 3 seconds
- The lock was left on from an earlier cycle; LG says it isn't cancelled at the end of a cycle or by turning the power off
- A child or someone else pressed the lock buttons while the washer was running
- Rarely, lock buttons or the control panel that don't respond, which LG says can signal a malfunction
Safe DIY checks
Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.
- Make sure the washer is powered on. The lock can only be turned off with the power on.
- Find the lock control: a button labeled Child Lock, Control Lock or CL, or two buttons with a small lock symbol between or under them.
- Press and hold that button, or both lock-marked buttons at the same time, for about 3 to 5 seconds until you hear a chime and CL disappears.
- If nothing happens, try LG's common model combinations: Temp + Rinse together on lock-symbol models, Spin on models marked *Child Lock (and on the WashTower washer panel), or Steam on Steam models. Check your owner's manual for your model's exact buttons.
- If the buttons still won't respond, turn the washer off, unplug it or switch off the breaker, press and hold Start/Pause for 5 seconds, then restore power and try again, which is LG's reset for an unresponsive control panel.
- Don't expect turning the washer off and on alone to clear CL; LG says the lock survives a power cycle.
🛠 When to call a pro
- Holding the correct lock buttons for 3 to 5 seconds never clears CL, even after LG's power reset.
- The washer powers on but none of the buttons respond, which LG says may need repair service.
- CL turns itself on without anyone pressing the lock buttons.
- The washer is under warranty. Contact LG support with your full model number before replacing any control parts.
Parts that commonly fix it
Always match the part number to your exact model.
Washer control board / user interface board
Only if a technician confirms the control panel or buttons have failed. Turning off Child Lock fixes CL in nearly every case.
