LG Washer Error Code LE (LE1): Motor Locked, Tub Won't Spin (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)

Reviewed 2026-10-22 · Based on 7 manufacturer & service sources

What the code means

LG USA support describes LE as the error shown when the washer tub fails to spin, because the motor can't operate properly. On top loaders LG calls it a 'Motor Locked Error' and shows LE or LE1 when the motor is arrested, often by a coin or object caught between the tub and the washboard (pulsator). On front loaders LG lists four causes: an overloaded washer straining the motor, the motor stopping temporarily after several cycles run back to back, a coin or object caught in a gap around the tub, and a temporary error. LG's fixes are to remove stuck objects, reduce the load (using the Bedding cycle for comforters), and unplug the washer for five minutes. If LE keeps returning, LG recommends a technician visit. On the technician side, LG's service notes and repair guides trace a persistent LE to the motor itself: a tub that won't turn freely (for example a failed tub bearing), damaged rotor magnets, loose rotor or stator bolts, a damaged stator or stator harness, a failed rotor position (Hall) sensor on models that have one, or the main control board.

⚠ Before you start

Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.

  1. Unplug the washer (or switch off the breaker), wait five minutes, plug it back in and try the cycle again. LG says this clears temporary errors.
  2. If the washer is packed full, take some items out. For a large comforter or other bulky bedding, use the Bedding cycle, as LG recommends.
  3. Turn the power off, unload the washer, and look in the gaps around the tub (and under the washboard on a top loader) for coins or other objects. Pull anything you find out with pliers or tweezers.
  4. If you've been running loads back to back, give the washer 30 minutes to an hour between cycles so the motor can cool, per LG's front-load FAQ.
  5. With the power off and the tub empty, turn the drum by hand. It should turn smoothly and quietly. Grinding, scraping or a drum that barely moves points to a mechanical problem that needs service.
  6. If the door stays locked with water inside, run a Spin or Drain cycle after the reset, or drain a front loader through the drain pump filter cap at the bottom front. Have towels and a shallow pan ready.
  7. If LE comes back after all of the above, stop running the washer and request service.

🛠 When to call a pro

  • LE keeps returning after a power reset, a lighter load and a check for stuck objects. LG recommends a technician visit at that point.
  • The drum is hard to turn by hand, grinds or scrapes, or makes a loud rumble during spin, which can mean a failed tub bearing.
  • You'd need to remove the back panel to check the rotor, stator or Hall sensor. Repair guides warn the motor circuit runs on about 310 V DC, which can be dangerous, so leave live voltage tests to a technician.
  • The washer is under warranty. Request service from LG instead of opening it yourself.

Parts that commonly fix it

Always match the part number to your exact model.

⚙

Rotor position (Hall) sensor

Only on models that have one (LG phased it out on later front loaders). Check your model's exploded parts view before ordering.
