Maytag Dryer F4 E4 Error Code: Low or No L2 Line Voltage (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)

What the code means

Maytag's F4 E4 help article calls it Low or No Line Voltage: there may be a problem with the home power supply that keeps the dryer's heater from turning on. Maytag's service tech sheets list F4E4 as an L2 Line Voltage Error on electric models, set when low L2 voltage is detected at the dryer's control board. The trip point is under 50 V on some tech sheets and under 30 V on others, depending on the model. An electric dryer runs on two 120-volt legs: one powers the motor and controls, the other is needed for the heating element. Lose the second leg and the drum keeps spinning with no heat. On models with a customer display, the same condition shows as L2, and Maytag's tech sheets point L2 back to the F4E4 procedure. F4 E1 (no voltage at the heater relay) and F4 E3 (restricted airflow) are different heating-system codes.

Safe DIY checks

โš  Before you start

F4 E4 is about the 240-volt supply. Unplug the dryer or turn off both breakers before touching the cord, terminal block or control board, and leave voltage measurements and house wiring to a licensed electrician.

  1. Touch any pad to clear F4 E4 from the display, as Maytag directs.
  2. At the electrical panel, check both breakers for the dryer. A double-pole breaker can look on while one side has tripped, so switch it fully off and back on. With fuses, check both.
  3. Cycle power: turn the dryer's breaker(s) off for 5 minutes, turn them back on, start a timed dry cycle and watch for 5 minutes to make sure F4 E4 doesn't return.
  4. With the dryer unplugged, make sure the plug is fully seated in the outlet. Maytag says to make sure the terminal screws where the cord attaches to the dryer are tight; do this only with the dryer unplugged.
  5. If the dryer was just installed or moved, compare the cord hookup to the installation instructions for a 3-wire or 4-wire connection.
  6. If the code comes back after these checks, stop there and call an electrician or schedule service.

๐Ÿ›  When to call a pro

  • F4 E4 returns after the breakers were checked and power was cycled. Maytag says to check with a qualified electrician about the 240-volt supply.
  • A breaker keeps tripping, a fuse keeps blowing, or the outlet, plug or cord looks scorched or feels hot. Stop using the dryer.
  • Measuring voltage at the outlet or terminal block. That's live 240-volt work for an electrician or technician.
  • Checking the relay connections or the P14 connector on the control board, which Maytag's tech sheet lists for service technicians with the dryer unplugged.
  • The dryer is under warranty. Book service through Maytag with the model and serial number.

Dryer power cord (3-wire or 4-wire, to match your outlet)

Only if an electrician or technician finds the cord damaged or wired wrong. Follow your dryer's installation instructions for 3- or 4-wire connection.
