Maytag Washer F7E1 (F7 E1): Motor or Basket Speed Error (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)
What the code means
Maytag's front-load help pages call F7 E1 "a motor speed sensing error": the motor can't achieve the correct speed for the cycle you picked. On top loaders, Maytag's own help page only gives the 5-minute reset, but the service tech sheet for Maytag's belt-drive top loaders (the one iFixit links for the Bravos XL MVWX500BW0, page 7) lists F7E1 as a "basket speed fault": the main control can't determine how fast the basket is spinning, or the speed changes too quickly. Whirlpool's service pointer W10606242, which covers all HE, Hybrid and Classic belt-drive top-load (VMW) models, says the first thing to check is the speed sensor circuit in the shifter, but calibration, friction and other drive-system problems that keep the basket from moving can set the same code. It's related to, but not the same as, F7E7, where the speed sensor works but the basket never reaches its target RPM.
Likely causes
- Shipping bolts and plastic spacers still in the back of a new front loader (Maytag Product Help)
- Overloaded washer, so the motor can't get the drum up to speed (Maytag front-load error code list)
- A basket, impeller or motor that won't rotate freely, such as clothing caught between the basket and tub (top-load tech sheet)
- Top loaders: speed (optical) sensor in the shifter assembly not reading the basket, or loose harness connections from the main control to the motor and shifter (tech sheet, service pointer W10606242)
- Top loaders: drive belt off or a pulley loose on the motor or agitator shaft (tech sheet)
- Top loaders: bad motor capacitor, a disconnected motor or capacitor connector, or broken wires (tech sheet)
- Top loaders: the washer needs to be calibrated, for example after a repair (tech sheet)
Safe DIY checks
Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.
- Clear the code on a front loader: Maytag's error code list says to press Pause/Cancel twice and then Power once.
- Reset the control: unplug the washer (or switch off its breaker) for 5 minutes, plug it back in, and start a cycle. Maytag gives this same step for front loaders and top loaders.
- If it's a new front loader, check the back panel. Maytag says all four shipping bolts and their plastic spacers must be removed before use; leftover bolts can cause noise, vibration and error codes.
- Take some clothes out. Maytag lists an overloaded washer as one of the two first checks on front loaders, and a heavy, waterlogged load is the easiest thing to rule out.
- With the power off and the water drained, turn the drum or basket by hand. It should spin freely; if something drags or catches (a sock between the basket and tub, for example), clear it before running another cycle.
- On a top loader, spread the clothes evenly around the basket. An off-balance load is one of the causes the tech sheet lists for the related F7E7 code.
- If F7E1 comes back after all of that, Maytag's advice is to schedule service (1-800-344-1274 in the US).
🛠 When to call a pro
- The code returns after the 5-minute reset with bolts out and a normal load.
- Top-load service steps include checking the shifter, drive belt and pulleys, motor and run capacitor, and the harness to the main control, which means opening the cabinet on a 120 V appliance.
- The tech sheet's Tachometer Verification mode, where the status lights show basket speed as the basket is turned by hand, is how a technician tells a dead speed sensor from a weak motor or a bad control. That mode and the shifter and motor tests are marked for service technicians only.
- After the main control, basket, drive assembly, suspension, motor or capacitor is replaced on a top loader, the tech sheet requires a Calibration Mode run, or wash performance suffers.
- You smell burning or the washer hums without turning. Unplug it and call for service.
- The washer is under warranty. Schedule Maytag service instead of opening it.
Parts that commonly fix it
Always match the part number to your exact model.
Maytag washer drive belt (exact part for your model)
Belt-drive top loaders only; check that the belt is actually off or worn before ordering.

Belt-drive top loaders only; have it tested first, since a bad capacitor is one of several causes the tech sheet lists.
