Maytag Washer Error Code F9 E1: Long Drain Time (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)
What the code means
Maytag says F9 E1 indicates drain times longer than expected, typically over eight minutes, and calls it a drain pump system problem (long drain). On top-load models the display may show drn instead. Maytag's checklist points first at the drain hose (kinked, clogged, pushed too far into the standpipe, or taped in with no air gap), then the drain pump filter on models that have one, then the small drain holes in a front-loader's door seal. Excess suds from non-HE detergent or thickened 'no splash' bleach can also slow draining. Maytag's service literature for the MVW6200KW top-load notes that a malfunctioning pressure transducer (the water level sensor) can also set F9E1, because the washer can't see the water level drop.
Likely causes
- Drain hose kinked, crushed behind the washer, or clogged
- Drain hose pushed more than 4.5 in (113–114 mm) into the standpipe or laundry tub
- Drain hose taped or sealed into the standpipe with no air gap
- Drain hose outlet higher than 96 in (244 cm) from the bottom of the washer, or lower than the minimum height for your model
- Clogged drain pump filter (some front-load models, behind the bottom drawer)
- Clogged drain holes in a front-loader's door seal (bellow)
- Too many suds from non-HE detergent, too much detergent, or 'no splash' liquid bleach
- Pressure hose pinched, plugged or leaking, or a failed pressure transducer
- A failed drain pump
Safe DIY checks
Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.
- Pull the washer out and check the drain hose along its whole length for kinks, crushing, or a clog. Straighten it and make sure nothing presses on it.
- Check how the hose sits in the drainpipe. Use the U-shaped hose form from the installation instructions so no more than 4.5 in (113 mm) goes into the pipe, and don't tape it in. Maytag says there must be an air gap so water isn't siphoned out.
- Check the drain height. On front-load washers Maytag lists a standpipe height of 39 in (99 cm) minimum and 96 in (244 cm) maximum; on top-load washers it says the hose end should be higher than 36 in from the floor.
- Clean the drain pump filter if your washer has one. Unplug it, put a flat pan and a towel down, open the bottom drawer, drain the water through the small black hose, then turn the filter counterclockwise to remove it, clear lint and debris, rinse it, and turn it back in clockwise as far as it goes. Location varies by model, so check your owner's manual.
- On a front-loader, wipe out the door seal and clear its small drain holes.
- Use HE detergent in the recommended amount and avoid 'no splash' or 'easy pour' bleach. If the tub is full of suds, run a rinse and spin with no detergent.
- Run a drain and spin. If it still drains slowly or the pump hums without moving water, the pump or the water level sensing system needs a closer look.
🛠 When to call a pro
- The hose, filter and suds are all fine and F9 E1 keeps coming back.
- The drain pump hums, buzzes or stays silent while water sits in the tub.
- You suspect the pressure hose or pressure transducer. Maytag's service test for these means removing the console and checking the main control, which is technician work.
- Water won't drain at all and you can't safely get it out through the filter.
- The washer is under warranty. Schedule Maytag service (1-800-344-1274) instead of opening it.
Parts that commonly fix it
Always match the part number to your exact model.
Drain pump
The most common replacement once the hose and filter are ruled out. Match the part to the model number on your washer's tag.

Replace if the filter or its seal is cracked or won't seat.

Replace if it's cracked, permanently kinked, or too short to route without kinks.

Inexpensive, but sits inside the cabinet. Replace if it's split, plugged or leaking air.
