Whirlpool Washer F7 E1 (F7E1): Motor Speed Sensing Error, Washer Can't Reach Spin Speed (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)

Reviewed 2026-10-23 · Based on 7 manufacturer & service sources

What the code means

Whirlpool's front-load help pages describe F7 E1 as "a motor speed sensing error": the motor can't achieve the correct speed for the cycle you picked, which usually means it's having trouble turning. Whirlpool's Laundry Tower page lists the potential cause simply as "motor or rotor sensor." The service tech sheets go further. On front loaders (tech sheet W10254476) it's a "drive motor speed sensing error / washer overload": the motor control can't properly detect motor speed, so the washer shuts down, and if it happens during high spin the door stays locked for 2-3 minutes. On top loaders (tech sheets W10240504 and W11448643) it's a "basket speed fault," shown when the main control can't determine the speed of the basket or the speed changes too quickly. It's related to, but not the same as, F7 E7 on top loaders, where the speed sensor works but the basket never reaches its target RPM.

Likely causes

Safe DIY checks

⚠ Before you start

Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.

  1. Clear the code. Whirlpool's front-load list says to press Pause/Cancel twice and then Power once. If the door is locked after a high-spin error, give it 2-3 minutes to release.
  2. Reset the control: unplug the washer (or switch off its breaker) for 5 minutes, plug it back in, and start a cycle. Whirlpool gives this same step for front loaders, top loaders and the Laundry Tower.
  3. If it's a new front loader, check the back panel. All four shipping bolts and their plastic spacers have to be removed before use, per Whirlpool; leftover bolts can cause noise, vibration and error codes.
  4. Take some clothes out. Whirlpool lists an overloaded washer as one of the two first checks, and a heavy, waterlogged load is the easiest thing to rule out.
  5. With the power off, turn the drum or basket by hand. It should spin freely; if something drags or catches (a sock between the basket and tub, for example), clear it before running another cycle.
  6. If F7 E1 comes back after all of that, Whirlpool's advice is to schedule service (1-866-698-2538 in the US).

🛠 When to call a pro

  • The code returns after the 5-minute reset with bolts out and a normal load.
  • Top-load service steps include checking the drive belt and pulleys, the motor and run capacitor, and the harness to the motor and shifter, which means opening the cabinet on a 120 V appliance.
  • Whirlpool's tech sheets use a Tachometer Verification service mode, where the status LEDs show basket speed as the basket is turned, to tell a dead speed signal from a weak motor. That mode and the motor tests are meant for service technicians.
  • After the main control, basket, drive assembly, suspension, motor or capacitor is replaced on a top loader, Whirlpool requires a Calibration Mode run (about 2-4 minutes with an empty basket), or wash performance suffers.
  • You smell burning or the washer hums without turning. Unplug it and call for service.

Parts that commonly fix it

Always match the part number to your exact model.

⚙

Whirlpool washer drive belt (exact part for your model)

Top loaders with a belt drive only; check that the belt is actually off or worn before ordering.

⚙

Whirlpool washer motor run capacitor (exact part for your model)

Top loaders only; have it tested first, since a bad capacitor is one of several causes Whirlpool lists.
