What the code means
Maytag's top-load help page says Sd may appear as 5d, and that Sd or Sud means there are excessive suds in the washer and it is running a suds reduction routine. On front loaders, Maytag explains that the washer can't spin water out through heavy suds, so it extends the rinse: it pauses tumbling, adds water and lets the bubbles break, and that pause and rinse may happen several times. Maytag's front-load suds guide adds that Sud or Sd with the Rinse light on means the washer is still removing suds, while Sud or Sd with Cycle Complete lit means the load may not be fully rinsed or spun out. Likely causes

Safe DIY checks
Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.
- Let the cycle continue. The washer is running its own suds reduction routine, and the pauses and extra rinses are normal.
- If the cycle finishes with Cycle Complete lit and the clothes still soapy or wet, run a Rinse/Spin cycle with no detergent.
- Use only HE detergent and measure it by the detergent maker's dose for your load size and soil level. A more concentrated detergent needs less.
- Save large detergent pacs for large or heavily soiled loads.
- If you used "no splash" or "easy pour" bleach, switch to regular liquid chlorine bleach. Maytag suggests running the washer empty with regular bleach or affresh washer cleaner before the next load.
- If your washer has a bulk dispenser, don't add detergent by hand while it's enabled, and check that the concentration setting matches your detergent.
