Whirlpool Dishwasher F2 E2: Control Panel Not Talking to the Main Control (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)

Reviewed 2026-10-22 · Based on 6 manufacturer & service sources

What the code means

Whirlpool Product Help lists F2E2 as "Main Control Communication Error." Whirlpool's service tech sheet W11532444 (for 24 inch Whirlpool dishwashers such as the WDT730HAMZ) groups it under Function 2, User Interface, and describes it as "User Interface (UI) - No response from UI": the main control is powered but isn't getting a reply from the control panel (the user interface, or UI). The F number is the system and the E number is the specific error; on models with a numeric display it shows as F2 then E2, and on models with only lights the Clean or Complete light blinks 2 times, pauses, then blinks 2 more times (Whirlpool technical manual W11480208 explains this blink format). Whirlpool's newer 24 inch filtration and microfiltration platforms log the same kind of panel-to-control communication fault as F6E1 instead, so check which code your model's tech sheet uses. For that fault, Whirlpool's technical manuals W11480208 and W11499711 list the causes as a loose connection between the UI and the main control, a broken terminal or wire in the harness between them, or a failed communication circuit on the main control.

Safe DIY checks

⚠ Before you start

Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.

  1. Press Cancel (or Cancel/Drain) and let the dishwasher finish draining if it can.
  2. Reset the control: unplug the dishwasher, or turn off its circuit breaker if it's hard-wired. Whirlpool Product Help says 30 seconds; its reset guide says to wait at least 1 minute so the control fully powers down. Waiting the full minute covers both.
  3. Restore power, close the door firmly, pick a cycle and press Start.
  4. If the dishwasher runs normally, watch for the code over the next few cycles. A one-time F2E2 after a storm or outage is often just a glitch.
  5. If F2E2 comes back, schedule service. Checking the harness and boards means taking the door panels apart near live wiring, which Whirlpool's tech sheets reserve for service technicians.

🛠 When to call a pro

  • F2E2 returns after a full power reset.
  • The control panel is dead or won't respond to key presses, which points to the panel, its harness, or the main control.
  • Inspecting and reseating the harness between the panel and the main control, checking it for continuity, and testing the boards. Whirlpool's manuals say to check the connections and harness first and replace the main control only if the harness is good.
  • The dishwasher is under warranty. Call Whirlpool service at 1-866-698-2538 instead of opening the door yourself.

Parts that commonly fix it

Always match the part number to your exact model.

⚙

Dishwasher control panel (user interface) board

Only after a technician confirms the harness is good and the panel has failed. Order by your full model number; boards differ between models.

Dishwasher wire harness (panel to main control)

Only if a wire or terminal is broken or corroded. Match the part to your model number.

Dishwasher cleaner

Not a fix for F2E2, but Whirlpool suggests cleaning the dishwasher about every 30 days.
