Whirlpool Dishwasher F7 E1 (F7E1) Error Code: Wash Motor or Heater Problem, Depending on Model

What the code means

Whirlpool dishwasher codes have two parts: the F number is the function (the system with the problem) and the E number is the specific error. On models with only status lights, Whirlpool Product Help says to count the Clean light flashes: 7 flashes, a short pause, then 1 flash means F7-E1. Which system Function 7 points to depends on the model. Whirlpool technical manual W11480208, for Whirlpool, JennAir, Brastemp and KitchenAid 24 inch filtration dishwashers, lists "7 - Wash Motor, 1 - Motor not running", caused by a loose connection in the motor circuit, a faulty wash motor, or the control's motor drive or sense circuit. In that manual the same wash motor problem can also make the control log a drain error (F9E1), because the control uses the wash motor signal to confirm draining, and "motor problems force cycle to start and stop repeatedly". Older Whirlpool tech sheet W10751166C (2015) instead lists "7 - Heating, 1 - No Heat": the control detected a water heating problem, disabled the heater, and kept running cycles without heat. The causes there are an open heater, an open connection or part in the heater circuit (such as the hi-limit thermostat), or the heater drive circuit on the control. On that generation, Function 4 is the wash motor, while on the newer filtration models Function 4 is heating, which is why the two meanings swap. Some third-party code sites describe F7E1 as less than 4°C of temperature rise 10 minutes after the heater turns on; we couldn't find that wording in a Whirlpool document, so it isn't used here.

Safe DIY checks

⚠ Before you start

Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.

  1. Write down exactly what the display shows, or count the Clean light flashes (7, pause, 1), before doing anything else.
  2. Reset the control the way Whirlpool describes: unplug the dishwasher for 30 seconds, or turn off its breaker for 30 seconds if it's hard-wired, then restore power.
  3. Remove and clean the filter, and check the sump area under it for glass, bones, labels, or broken rack parts that could jam the wash pump.
  4. Make sure the spray arms spin freely and their holes aren't plugged, and that no tall item in the lower rack is blocking them.
  5. Run the hot water at the kitchen sink until it's hot before starting a cycle. Whirlpool's tech sheet recommends 120°F (49°C) water at the sink, and cold incoming water makes heating problems more likely.
  6. Run a normal cycle and watch it. If it starts and stops over and over, hums without washing, or shows F7E1 again, the newer-model wash motor meaning is likely. If it finishes but dishes come out cool and poorly dried, the older-model heating meaning is likely.
  7. Look up which meaning applies using the tech sheet or technical manual for your exact model number. If the code returns after a reset and cleaning, Whirlpool's advice is to schedule service.

🛠 When to call a pro

  • The code comes back after a 30-second power reset and a filter and spray arm cleaning.
  • The wash motor needs resistance, fuse, and voltage checks at the control board connector. Whirlpool's manual reserves live voltage measurements for authorized technicians.
  • The heater, hi-limit thermostat, or heater wiring needs resistance testing, or you see burned or melted spots on the heater or its connections.
  • The control board needs replacing because the motor or heater circuit tests good but still gets no power from the board.
  • You also see drain codes (F9E1) or water under the dishwasher. Turn off power and water to the dishwasher until it's checked.
