Beko Washing Machine Error Code E4 (E04): Water Filling Fault
What the code means
Beko doesn't publish one error list for every washer it makes, and its codes differ between platforms, so check your own manual's table first. Some newer Beko machines, such as the BMM5DFO5741W washer-dryer, show a no-water fault as E02 instead and don't list E04 at all. On Beko's digital-display washing machines, UK Whitegoods' Beko WMA fault table, which it says is written for repairers from information Beko gave it, lists E4 as Filling error detected. It says you may see the machine constantly filling and discharging water with no wash action, or the door jammed, and that the checks are the water valve, the valve triac (the switching part on the control board that powers the valve), the control board and the wiring. The UK spares supplier eSpares says E04/E4 usually means the machine isn't filling with water, from something as simple as a blocked inlet hose or low water pressure up to a faulty water inlet valve, and gives a step-by-step valve replacement. So treat E4 as anything that stops water coming in normally, and if the drum keeps filling and emptying on its own, turn the tap off and get the valve and board checked.
Likely causes
- The water tap is closed or only partly open, or the household supply is off
- A kinked, trapped or frozen inlet hose
- Blocked mesh filters in the end of the inlet hose or in the inlet valve
- Low mains water pressure (eSpares)
- A faulty water inlet valve (eSpares; UK Whitegoods: check water valve)
- Loose or damaged wiring to the valve, or a failed valve triac on the control board (UK Whitegoods)
Safe DIY checks
Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.
- Switch the machine off at the wall for a few minutes, then turn it back on and try a short programme.
- Make sure the tap behind the machine is fully open and that other taps in the house have water.
- Pull the machine out carefully and straighten any kinks in the inlet hose. If it runs through a cold garage or outbuilding, check it isn't frozen.
- Turn the tap off, unscrew the inlet hose at the tap and clean the mesh filter in the hose end with a soft brush. Then unscrew the hose from the back of the machine, pull the mesh filter out of the inlet valve with pliers, rinse it and push it back in. Refit the hose hand-tight, open the tap and check for leaks.
- Check your water pressure the way Beko suggests: run the nearest cold tap into a jug; you need at least one litre in about seven seconds. If it's slower, a plumber needs to look at the supply, not the washer.
- If the machine keeps filling and draining with no wash action, or water keeps running in after you stop it, turn the tap off and leave it off until the valve is checked.
- If you're comfortable working on appliances and the supply is fine: unplug the machine, remove the top panel (two Torx T20 screws at the back, per eSpares) and check the wires are pushed fully onto the inlet valve. eSpares shows the full valve swap: one PH1 Phillips screw, twist the valve anticlockwise from the rear, note the wire positions, move the two hose clips with pliers and fit the new valve. Order the valve by your exact model number.
๐ When to call a pro
- E4 stays after the tap, hose, both filters and the pressure check out: a technician tests the inlet valve coils and the wiring, then the valve triac on the control board.
- Water keeps entering the drum when the machine is off or paused: turn off the tap and book a repair, since a stuck valve or failed board switch can overfill the machine.
- The machine is under Beko's guarantee: use Beko's own repair service rather than opening it, so you don't affect cover.
- You smell burning or the house trips its electrics: unplug it and leave it for an engineer.
