Beko Washing Machine Error Code E5 (E05): Water Not Draining

What the code means

Beko doesn't publish one error list for every washer it makes, and its codes differ between platforms, so check your own manual's table first. Some newer Beko machines, such as the BMM5DFO5741W washer-dryer, show a drain fault as E03 instead (see our Beko E3 page). On Beko's digital-display washing machines, UK Whitegoods' Beko WMA fault table, which it says is written for repairers from information Beko gave it, lists E5 as Failure to drain. It says this is often reported as the water not draining from the machine, the programme taking too long or the machine not spinning, and that the checks are blockages or obstructions in the pump filter, the pump, the pump triac (the switching part on the control board that powers the pump) and the control board. The UK spares supplier eSpares says E5/E05, often with the machine full of water and not spinning, usually points to a drain problem but not always a failed pump: check the drain hose for blockages or damage, the pump filter and the impeller area behind it before replacing the pump. Beko's own guides say a machine that won't drain most often has a clogged pump filter, which should be cleaned every three months or when it's blocked.

Safe DIY checks

โš  Before you start

Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.

  1. Switch the machine off and unplug it. If it has just run a hot wash, wait for the water to cool first; Beko warns it can reach 90 ยฐC.
  2. Put towels down and get a shallow tray or bowl ready. Open the flap at the bottom right of the front. If there's a small emergency drain hose, pull it out, remove its plug and let the water run into the tray, re-plugging it each time the tray fills.
  3. When the water has stopped, turn the pump filter anticlockwise and pull it out. Clear any fluff, hair, coins or other objects and rinse it under the tap.
  4. Look into the filter opening and wipe it out with a damp cloth. eSpares says debris can also sit around the impeller (the small plastic paddle behind the filter), so check that it isn't jammed. Refit the filter clockwise until it's secure and close the flap.
  5. Pull the machine out and check the drain hose for kinks, crushing or splits. Beko's manual for the BMM5DFO5741W says the top of the hose should sit between 65 and 100 cm from the floor; check your own manual for your model's range. If the hose goes into a sink trap or standpipe, make sure that isn't blocked too.
  6. Plug the machine in and run a rinse and spin or drain programme to see if the water clears.
  7. If you're comfortable working on appliances and E5 keeps coming back: eSpares gives a full drain pump swap, which on the model shown means removing the top, the control panel and the front panel (Torx T20 and T25 screws, door seal band and door lock). Order the pump by your exact model number.

๐Ÿ›  When to call a pro

  • E5 stays after you've cleaned the filter and checked the hose: a technician tests the drain pump and its wiring, then the pump triac on the control board.
  • You can hear the pump running but no water leaves, or you hear nothing at all when it should be draining: book a repair if you don't want to take the front off yourself.
  • The machine is under Beko's guarantee: use Beko's own repair service rather than opening it, so you don't affect cover.
  • Water is leaking onto the floor, or you smell burning: unplug it and leave it for an engineer.
