Bosch Dishwasher E15: Water in the Base, Leak Protection Activated (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)
What the code means
Bosch defines E15 as: the safety switch has detected water in the base of the dishwasher and the leakage protection system has been activated. Under the tub sits a base pan with a foam float; when water collects there, the float rises and trips the safety (float) switch, and the dishwasher reports E15. Bosch's own instructions are to turn off the water inflow, check around the base and the hoses for leaks, kinks, or damage, replace any visibly damaged hose, and book service if the fault isn't visible or the code persists. Some Bosch markets show the same condition as F15 or E3100.
Likely causes
- A leak inside the cabinet that drips into the base pan: loose or cracked hose connections, a leaking pump seal, or a leaking water inlet valve
- Damaged, kinked, or split inlet or drain hoses (Bosch's first check)
- Water left in the base pan from an earlier leak or spill that never dried, keeping the float raised
- Foam float stuck in the raised position by debris or wiring obstructing it
- Less commonly, a temporary control fault that clears with a power reset
Safe DIY checks
Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.
- Turn off the water supply to the dishwasher, as Bosch instructs, and switch the dishwasher off.
- Try a reset: disconnect power (unplug or switch off the breaker) for about five minutes, then restore it. If E15 doesn't come back and there's no water under the unit, watch the next cycle closely.
- Check around the dishwasher base and the visible inlet and drain hoses for water, kinks, cracks, or splits. Replace any visibly damaged hose with the correct Bosch spare part.
- With power and water off, remove the kick plate (Torx or Phillips screws) and look into the base pan. Soak up any standing water with towels or a sponge.
- Find the foam float near the center of the base and dry it and the area under it. Clear any debris or wiring that keeps it from dropping freely.
- Reassemble only once everything is dry, restore power and water, and run a short cycle. Watch for drips from hose connections, the pump, and the inlet valve without reaching under the running machine.
- If E15 returns, the leak is still there. Shut the water off again and stop: don't keep running the dishwasher with the code.
🛠 When to call a pro
- You can't see a leak, or E15 keeps coming back after the base is dried (Bosch advises booking an engineer rather than attempting further repairs).
- The leak is from the pump, sump, inlet valve, or another internal part that requires pulling the dishwasher out of the cabinet.
- The float switch itself needs replacing; on Bosch units this means uninstalling the dishwasher and disconnecting water, drain, and electrical connections.
- There's water damage to the floor or cabinets, or water near the electrical connection box.
- Never bypass or disable the float/safety switch to keep the dishwasher running.
