Bosch Washer E36 (E:36-10, E:36-25, E:36-26) Error Code: Water Isn't Draining (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)

What the code means

Bosch US's washer error-code list has two E36 entries. For E:36 -10, Bosch says the code "could be caused by a number of issues": a blocked or kinked drain pipe or outlet hose, an outlet hose connected too high, an unsuitable extension on the outlet hose, a blocked drain pump, a pump cap that isn't fully screwed in, or too much detergent. For E:36 -25 and -26, Bosch's answer is simply "Drain pump is blocked" and to clean the drain pump. In short, the washer tried to pump water out and it didn't drain the way it expected. The number after the dash narrows the cause, so note the full code before you clear it. Bosch code lists differ between model families, so check your own owner's manual too.

Likely causes

Safe DIY checks

โš  Before you start

Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.

  1. Turn the washer off and unplug it. Bosch warns the water that comes out may be very hot, so let a hot wash cool first.
  2. Put a towel and a shallow pan under the service flap at the bottom front. Open the flap and drain the water through the small emergency drain tube if your model has one.
  3. Slowly unscrew the pump cover and let the rest of the water out.
  4. Clean the inside of the pump housing, the cover thread and the cover. Check that the impeller inside can turn freely. If something is jammed and you can't get it out, call Bosch support.
  5. Screw the pump cover back in all the way. Bosch says the handle on the cap must be vertical.
  6. Check the drain hose for kinks. With a bucket ready, loosen it at the drain, pour out any water and clear the hose and the drain connection.
  7. Make sure the hose outlet is no higher than 39 inches (1 meter) and remove any unsuitable hose extension.
  8. Pour about 1 quart (1 liter) of water into the detergent drawer, check the pump cover for leaks, then run the Drain program.
  9. If E:36 -10 showed up with lots of suds, Bosch suggests mixing one tablespoon of fabric softener with about 2 cups (0.5 liters) of water and pouring it into compartment II (not for outdoor clothing, sportswear or down-filled items), then using less detergent next time with the same load.

๐Ÿ›  When to call a pro

  • E36 comes back after the pump, cap and hose are clean and the hose height is right. Bosch says to contact support.
  • The pump impeller is jammed and you can't remove the object safely.
  • Water leaks from the pump cover even after you've screwed it in fully.
  • The washer is under warranty. Bosch Customer Support is at 1-800-944-2904.
