Whirlpool Washer Error Code F9 E1: Long Drain Time (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)
What the code means
Whirlpool says F9 E1 indicates drain times longer than expected, typically over eight minutes. Whirlpool's service literature explains what happens: if the drain runs for 8 minutes without the pressure sensor seeing the water drop to its reset level, the washer turns off the valves and stops the drain pump. Per the technical sheet, the washer drains for 4 minutes, pauses 5 minutes, then tries for 4 more minutes before showing F9 E1. A normal drain takes less than 2 minutes. Suds can also slow draining, and a leaking or blocked pressure hose can make the washer think water is still in the tub.
Likely causes
- Drain hose kinked, crushed behind the washer, or clogged
- Drain hose pushed more than 4.5 in (113 mm) into the standpipe, or taped/sealed into it with no air gap
- Drain hose outlet higher than Whirlpool's 96 in (244 cm) maximum
- Clogged drain pump filter (coins, hair ties, lint, small socks)
- Clogged drain holes in the door seal (bellow)
- Too many suds from using too much detergent or non-HE detergent
- Pinched, kinked, plugged, or leaking pressure hose or air trap between the tub and the pressure sensor
- A failed drain pump
Safe DIY checks
Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.
- Pull the washer out and check the drain hose for kinks or crushing along its whole length. Straighten it and make sure nothing is pressing on it.
- Check how the hose sits in the standpipe. Use the U-shaped hose form so no more than 4.5 in (113 mm) goes into the pipe, and don't tape or seal it in. Whirlpool says there must be an air gap.
- Make sure the standpipe or drain outlet is between 39 in (99 cm) and 96 in (244 cm) high, per Whirlpool's install specs.
- Clean the drain pump filter. Unplug the washer, put a flat pan and towels down, drain the water through the small drain hose first, then turn the filter counterclockwise to remove it, clear debris, rinse, and screw it back in clockwise until snug. Its location depends on the model (behind the bottom drawer or a lower access panel); check your owner's manual.
- Wipe out the door seal and clear its small drain holes.
- Use only HE detergent in the recommended amount. If the tub is full of suds, run a Rinse & Spin with no detergent to clear them.
- Run a Drain & Spin or Rinse & Spin. Whirlpool notes a normal drain takes under 2 minutes; if it's still slow or the pump hums without moving water, the pump or pressure system needs a closer look.
🛠 When to call a pro
- The hose, filter and suds are all fine and F9 E1 keeps coming back.
- The drain pump hums, buzzes or is silent while water stays in the tub. Whirlpool's tech sheet has a drain pump test, but it involves live voltage checks.
- You suspect the pressure hose, air trap or pressure sensor. They sit inside the cabinet.
- Water won't drain at all and you can't safely get it out through the filter.
- The washer is under warranty. Schedule Whirlpool service instead of opening it.
Parts that commonly fix it
Always match the part number to your exact model.
Drain pump
The most common replacement once the hose and filter are ruled out. Part numbers vary by model; match it to the model number on your washer's tag.

Replace if the filter or its seal is cracked or won't seat.
[affiliate link slot: AFFILIATE_SLOT_DRAIN_FILTER]Drain hose
Replace if it's cracked, permanently kinked, or too short to route without kinks.

Inexpensive, but sits inside the cabinet. Replace if it's split, plugged or leaking air.

Non-HE or too much detergent causes suds that slow draining.
