Maytag Oven F9 Error Code: Door Lock Fault or Miswired Power (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)
What the code means
Maytag's Product Help pages for ranges say F9-1, F9-2 and F9-3 mean there may be a problem with the oven door latch, the door lock switch or the associated wiring. Maytag Services' Cooking Products Fault Code Reference Guide (16023509, 2004) gives the detail for older Maytag, Jenn-Air and Magic Chef ranges. On freestanding ranges with RS1, T1 and T2 clocks (April 1997 on), plain F9 is "Door lock circuitry fault sensed": the control didn't see the door lock switches open and close at the right times. The guide says to check the lock switch wiring and lock assembly and not to replace the control. On other families, F9-1 means the door won't lock, F9-2 means it won't unlock or release, and F9-3 means the lock reads locked and unlocked at the same time. Double ovens use F9-1 to F9-3 for the upper oven and F9-4 to F9-6 for the lower oven. Newer Maytag wall ovens use F9 or F9 E0 differently. Maytag's wall oven page says it most often means the oven is wired incorrectly at the home electrical supply or the hard-wire connection, and to make sure L2 and neutral (N) aren't swapped. Maytag adds that power-line "noise" during an outage, or pressing keys during the 10-second delay at power-up, can also bring up F9, F9 E0 or PF. If your oven shows a dash number (F9-1) it's the door lock meaning. If it shows F9 E0, or it's a newer wall oven that was just installed, it's the wiring meaning. Whirlpool ovens use the same wiring meaning; see the Whirlpool F9 page.
Likely causes
- A temporary control glitch, for example after a power outage, power-line noise, or keys pressed during the 10-second power-up delay
- Door lock codes (F9-1, F9-2, F9-3 and plain F9 on older ranges): a loose or damaged wire between the door lock assembly and the control
- Door lock codes: a failed motorized door lock (latch motor assembly) or its lock and unlock switches
- Door lock codes: a latch that's jammed, bent or out of adjustment, or a door that isn't closing fully
- Wiring code (F9 or F9 E0 on newer wall ovens): the oven is wired incorrectly at the house supply or the hard-wire connection, such as L2 and neutral swapped
- Wiring code: a recent installation, move or electrical work that left a supply wire on the wrong terminal or loose
Safe DIY checks
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before opening panels.
- If the door is locked after a self-clean, let the oven cool completely first. Never force a locked oven door.
- Do Maytag's power reset: turn off the circuit breaker(s) for one minute, turn them back on, then don't touch the controls while you watch the display for one minute to make sure the code doesn't come back. Then check that the oven works.
- Write down exactly what the display shows (F9, F9-1, F9-2, F9-3 or F9 E0) and your model number. The dash number tells a technician which door lock check failed.
- For door lock codes, with the oven cool and the power off, make sure nothing keeps the door from closing fully and look at the latch area above the door for anything bent, broken or out of line.
- For F9 or F9 E0 on a wall oven that was recently installed or worked on, treat the wiring as the likely cause. Leave the power off and have a qualified electrician verify the supply and the hard-wire connection, as Maytag recommends.
- Don't keep resetting the breaker over and over if the code keeps returning. Repeated codes need a repair, not more resets.
🛠 When to call a pro
- The code comes back after the one-minute breaker reset.
- The door is stuck locked after the oven has cooled and the power has been reset.
- Door lock codes: a technician checks the wire connections from the lock assembly to the control first. Maytag's guide says to replace the motorized door lock only if the connections are good, and not to replace the control for plain F9 on 1997-and-later freestanding ranges.
- Wiring code: an electrician needs to check the house supply and the terminal or junction box connections. That means working with live 240-volt circuits.
- The oven is under warranty. Call Maytag at 1-800-344-1274 or schedule service rather than opening it up.
