KitchenAid Oven F5E1 (F5 E1) Error Code: Door Latch Not Working (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)
What the code means
KitchenAid's Product Help pages say F5 E1 means there may be a problem with the door latch assembly, the door switch, or the associated wiring (the range page names the main oven door latch). KitchenAid also notes its codes can display in F# E# or E# F# format, so E1 F5 is the same code. Whirlpool Corporation, which makes KitchenAid ovens, defines F5E1 in its range tech sheet W10873896A as "Door latch not operating (Clean mode)": the control ran the latch motor but didn't see the latch switch change the way it expected. The same tech sheet uses F5E0 for a different problem, the door and door switches not agreeing in Clean mode. Its test sorts F5E1 into three cases: the latch motor and switch work but the mechanical linkage doesn't catch the door slot; the door locks but the switch doesn't report it (motor assembly replaced); or the motor never runs (control relay, motor or wiring).
Likely causes
- A failed door latch motor assembly, so the latch doesn't move when the oven tries to lock for self-clean
- A latch switch inside the motor assembly that doesn't report the door as locked, even though the door did lock
- A mechanical problem in the latch linkage: the cam, actuating rod or latch pawl is bent, loose, or no longer lines up with the slot in the door
- Loose, damaged or corroded wiring or connectors between the latch assembly, the door switch and the oven control
- A failed latch motor relay on the oven control board (the tech sheet replaces the control only after checking for 120 volts at the latch motor)
- A temporary glitch, for example after a power interruption during self-clean, that a one-minute power reset clears
Safe DIY checks
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before opening panels.
- Turn off the oven's circuit breaker(s) for one minute, turn them back on, and watch the display for one minute. If F5 E1 doesn't come back, check that the oven works normally (this is KitchenAid's own reset).
- If the door is stuck locked, press Cancel/Off to start a latch reset, wait 20 to 30 seconds and try the door. If it was in self-clean, the oven has to cool to about 200°F before the door will open. Don't pry or force it.
- If the door is still locked after a breaker reset, KitchenAid says to let the oven cool for about 30 to 90 minutes, then move the latch arm to the left to unlock the door.
- If power went out during self-clean and the cycle didn't resume, KitchenAid says to select Self Clean, then Cancel, wait a couple of minutes and try again.
- With the oven cool and power off, look at the latch area above the door and the slot in the top of the door. Check for anything bent, broken or out of line, and make sure the door closes squarely and isn't warped.
- If the code keeps coming back, you can still bake on many models, but don't run self-clean until the latch is fixed.
🛠 When to call a pro
- F5 E1 returns after the one-minute breaker reset.
- The door stays locked after the oven has cooled and the reset steps above don't release it.
- Diagnosis needs the oven's service mode and live 120-volt checks at the latch motor, which Whirlpool's tech sheet reserves for technicians.
- Replacing the latch motor assembly or control board means removing the cooktop or control panel, or pulling a built-in wall oven from the cabinet.
- The oven is still under warranty. Use KitchenAid's contact or schedule-service options instead of opening it.
