Frigidaire Oven F9 Error Code (F90-F94): Door Lock Problem (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)
What the code means
The door lock on a self-cleaning Frigidaire oven is a small motor that drives a latch over the door, with a switch that tells the electronic oven control (EOC) whether the latch is locked or unlocked. F9 means the control ran or watched that lock and didn't get the answer it expected. An older Frigidaire troubleshooting sheet describes the two-digit F9 as lock motor switches that are out of sequence or shorted, and explains that ranges built from serial date code VF426 onward (and many replacement controls) show expanded three-digit codes instead. In that table, F9 becomes F90 (maximum door unlock time exceeded), F91 (maximum unlock attempts exceeded), F92 (maximum door open time exceeded), F93 (maximum door lock time exceeded) and F94 (maximum door lock attempts exceeded). Frigidaire's own oven error code guide groups F90 through F94 as a door lock issue, and Sears PartsDirect lists F9 on Frigidaire self-cleaning wall ovens as an oven door lock failure. Because the lock is involved, you may find the door stuck locked or the oven refusing to start a self-clean.
Likely causes
- A failed or jammed door lock motor (the motor doesn't turn, or keeps running without reaching its stop)
- A lock motor switch that's bad or out of position, so the control can't tell whether the door is locked
- Binding in the latch linkage: the latch cam, lock motor rod or lock motor cam
- Loose, burnt or damaged wiring between the electronic oven control and the lock motor or its switch
- On the door open and door lock time codes (F92 to F94), a faulty oven door light switch
- Less often, a faulty electronic oven control, such as a lock relay that doesn't switch
Safe DIY checks
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before opening panels.
- If your oven has a lock or unlock control, follow Frigidaire's guide: press UNLOCK and follow the directions on the screen.
- Do a power reset: unplug the range for up to 30 seconds, or switch its breaker off and back on (that also resets anything else on the same circuit). Frigidaire says this clears most false error codes.
- Never force a locked door open. If the oven was just in self-clean, let it cool completely first; the lock is designed to hold while the oven is very hot.
- If F9 or an F90-F94 code comes back, leave the power off and note the full code (F9 vs. F91 and so on) and your model number from the label on the oven frame; techs and parts sites need both.
- If you're comfortable with a multimeter and can safely reach the lock assembly with the power off: Sears PartsDirect's check is to test the lock switch with the arm pushed in (near 0 ohms) and extended (OL), and to check the lock motor for an open (infinite) reading. Either failure means the lock assembly needs replacing.
🛠 When to call a pro
- Checking the wiring and connectors between the control and the lock motor and its micro switch, and repairing or replacing a damaged harness.
- Checking the latch cam, lock motor rod and lock motor cam for binding.
- Testing the lock motor coil for an open circuit, running the motor with a test cord to see if it turns, and checking the lock switch contacts when the cam presses its plunger; replacing the lock motor assembly if any of these fail.
- On F92, F93 or F94, testing the oven door light switch and replacing it if it's open.
- Replacing the electronic oven control only after the lock assembly, switches and wiring all test good, or if the control isn't sending power to the lock motor.
Parts that commonly fix it
Always match the part number to your exact model.
Oven door lock (latch motor) assembly
The usual fix for F9. Match the part to your model number.
