Maytag Oven F5 E1 Error Code: Door Latch Not Working (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)
What the code means
Maytag's Product Help pages say F5 E1 on a range points to a possible problem with the Main Oven Door Latch Assembly, the Door Switch or the associated wiring, and the wall oven page names the Door Latch Assembly, Door Switch or wiring. The fix Maytag gives owners is a one-minute breaker reset. Whirlpool Corporation, which makes Maytag ovens, defines F5E1 in its range tech sheets (for example W11503310 and the older LCC sheet W10361708A) as "Door latch not operating (Clean mode)", and notes it only applies to models that have a self-clean latch. The MyPros+ listing for Maytag ranges quotes the same definition from Maytag tech sheet W10198632. During the test, the control runs a small latch motor that drives a rod and hook (pawl) into a slot in the top of the door, and it watches a switch on the motor assembly to confirm the door locked. F5E1 means that check failed. It is different from F5E0, which means the door switch and latch switches don't agree. Note that F5 E1 on a Maytag front-load washer is a different code (a washer door switch error), so this page only covers ovens.
Likely causes
- A temporary control glitch, for example after a power outage during a self-clean, that clears with a power reset
- Something blocking the latch or door: packing material, an oversized dish, a rack out of position or built-up soil around the door
- A mechanical problem in the latch linkage: the cam, actuating rod or latch hook is bent, loose, or no longer lines up with the slot in the door
- A failed latch switch on the motor assembly, so the door locks but the control never sees it
- A failed latch motor (the tech sheets list about 500 to 3,000 ohms as normal), or damaged wiring to it
- A failed relay on the oven control board, so the latch motor never gets its 120 volts
Safe DIY checks
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before opening panels.
- If the door is locked after a self-clean, let the oven cool completely before doing anything. Never force a locked oven door, because that can bend the latch and the door.
- Reset the power the way Maytag recommends: turn off the circuit breaker(s) for one minute, turn them back on, and watch the display for one minute to make sure F5 E1 doesn't come back. Then check that the oven bakes normally.
- Make sure nothing is keeping the door from closing fully. Maytag lists packing material, oversized dishes, a rack out of position and food buildup around the door as common culprits, and says a range that isn't level can also keep the door from closing.
- With the oven cool and the power off, look at the latch area above the door and the slot in the top of the door. Check for anything bent, broken or out of line, and make sure the door isn't warped or sagging on its hinges.
- If you're comfortable with technician diagnostics, the tech sheets run the latch motor from the diagnostics mode (CANCEL, CANCEL, START, then SELF CLEAN). If the door doesn't lock but the locked icon lights, fix the linkage. If the door locks but the icon stays off, the motor assembly's switch is bad. If neither happens, check the motor and its power.
- With power off, a multimeter check across the latch motor should read about 500 to 3,000 ohms on the LCC ranges in tech sheet W10361708A. No continuity means the motor assembly needs replacing.
🛠 When to call a pro
- F5 E1 comes back after the one-minute breaker reset.
- The door is stuck locked after the oven has fully cooled and the power has been reset.
- The latch motor checks good but gets no 120 volts when it should run. The tech sheets then call for replacing the control.
- You'd need to measure live voltage at the control. The tech sheets say only authorized technicians should do that.
- The oven is under warranty. Call Maytag at 1-800-344-1274 or schedule service rather than opening it up.
