Whirlpool Washer 5d Error Code (Sd, Sud): Too Many Suds (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)
What the code means
Whirlpool says Sd (which can look like 5d on the display) or Sud means excess suds. On front loaders the washer can't spin water out through heavy suds, so it pauses tumbling, adds water and extends the rinse to break the bubbles down, and that pause-and-rinse may repeat several times. Whirlpool's front-load guide adds that if Sud or Sd shows with the Rinse light on, the washer is still removing suds, but if it shows with Cycle Complete lit, the load may not be fully rinsed or spun out. Whirlpool's top-load technical sheet (W10092760) explains how top loaders detect it: the control measures drag on the basket, shows Sd steady while it runs a mini clean-out cycle, and flashes Sd and ends the cycle if that clean-out can't fix the over-sudsing. That same sheet lists a bunched or twisted load, excess detergent, or a basket that can't engage during drain (mechanical friction in the drive) as possible reasons.
Likely causes
- Non-HE detergent, or more HE detergent than the label calls for (the most common cause per Whirlpool)
- A large detergent pac used on a small or lightly soiled load
- "No splash" or "easy pour" liquid chlorine bleach, which has a thickener that makes extra suds
- Very soft water, which needs less detergent than usual
- Bulk dispenser enabled (or set to the wrong concentration) plus detergent added by hand
- Detergent buildup inside the washer
- Front loaders: a kinked or clogged drain hose or standpipe
- Top loaders: a load bunched or twisted around the agitator, or drive friction that stops the basket engaging during drain (per the W10092760 tech sheet)
Safe DIY checks
Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.
- Let the cycle continue. The washer is running its own suds-removal routine and the extra rinses and pauses are normal.
- If the cycle ends with the code still showing or the clothes wet or soapy, run a Rinse/Spin cycle with no detergent.
- Use only HE detergent, and measure it by the manufacturer's dose for your load size and soil level. Concentrations vary (2x, 4x, 8x), so a more concentrated detergent needs less. Use less if you have very soft water.
- Save large pre-measured pacs for large or heavily soiled loads.
- If you used "no splash" or "easy pour" bleach, switch to regular liquid chlorine bleach.
- If your washer has a bulk dispenser, don't add detergent by hand while it's enabled, and check the concentration setting matches your detergent.
- Once the load is done, run a Clean Washer cycle (with affresh washer cleaner or liquid chlorine bleach, per Whirlpool) to remove detergent buildup, and repeat it monthly.
- Front loaders: check that the drain hose isn't kinked or clogged and is installed in the standpipe correctly.
- Top loaders: if the code came up mid-wash, open the lid and spread out a load that has bunched or wrapped around the agitator.
🛠 When to call a pro
- Sd or Sud keeps coming back even with the right amount of HE detergent, regular bleach and a clean washer.
- On a top loader, the basket doesn't seem to engage or spin during drain. Whirlpool's tech sheet points to mechanical friction in the drive, which needs a technician.
- The washer won't drain even after the suds are gone, or it moves on to a drain code such as F9 E1.
- The washer is under warranty. Use Whirlpool's contact or schedule-service page rather than opening it up.
Parts that commonly fix it
Always match the part number to your exact model.
HE detergent
Use an HE detergent at the dose on its label; Whirlpool says non-HE or too much detergent causes excess suds.

Whirlpool recommends a monthly Clean Washer cycle with affresh or liquid chlorine bleach to clear detergent buildup.

Front loaders only. Replace if it's cracked, permanently kinked, or too short to route without kinks.
