Speed Queen Washer Ed Error Codes (Ed 29, Ed 24, Ed 53 and More): Drive Board Errors (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)
What the code means
In Speed Queen's error code master list for home and light commercial controls (bulletin FB16-15, published by CSC ServiceWorks), the front-load washer table groups every code that starts with Ed under "Drive Board Errors." The drive board is the board that powers and controls the motor, and on these machines it also switches the door lock, water valves, heater and pump. The main codes are: Ed 10, voltage select error (the board sees the wrong input voltage, 120 V vs 240 V, a wrong dip switch 1 setting on the front-end control, or possibly water on the board); Ed 12, AC input over voltage; Ed 13, neutral line input out of range; Ed 21, DC bus over voltage; Ed 22, motor over temperature; Ed 23, IPM over current shunt (the IPM is the board's motor power module); Ed 24, hardware over current, where the rotor may be locked up; Ed 25, IPM over temperature; Ed 29, motor not connected, meaning the motor or one of its electrical phases isn't connected; Ed 44 to Ed 54, hardware on/off failures for the overcurrent circuit, door lock, heater, hot valve, cold valve, detergent and softener valves, inrush, voltage doubler, door lock select voltage and pump pins; Ed 55 and Ed 56, heater thermistor shorted or open; and Ed 63 and Ed 64, IPM temperature sensor shorted or open. Every entry says to unpower the machine to clear the error. Searches also turn up Ed 36, mostly from top-load owners, but Ed 36 isn't in the Speed Queen tables we checked, so treat any meaning you see for it online as unconfirmed and give a technician your model number and the exact code. Don't confuse Ed codes with the Er codes (Er, dr drain, Er, nF fill, door lock codes), which are separate.
Likely causes
- A loose, partly unplugged or damaged harness between the motor and the drive board (the listed cause of Ed 29).
- A drum that won't turn freely, an overloaded tub or a locked-up motor rotor, which can trip the over current and over temperature codes (Ed 22 to Ed 25).
- Supply voltage that is too high or out of range, a damaged power supply harness, or a front-end control whose voltage dip switch doesn't match the machine (Ed 10, Ed 12, Ed 13, Ed 21).
- Lint built up on the drive board's heat sink (Ed 25), or water that reached the drive board (Ed 10).
- Uneven motor phase windings, meaning a failing motor (Ed 23, Ed 24, and Ed 21 if it happens only at the start of spin).
- A damaged heater thermistor or its wiring (Ed 55, Ed 56).
- A failed drive board, which is the listed fix for most Ed 44 to Ed 64 codes and for any Ed code that keeps coming back.
Safe DIY checks
Unplug the washer before touching the drum, the harnesses or anything behind the panels. The drive board and motor circuits run on line voltage, so harness, voltage and winding checks should be left to a qualified appliance technician. If the code is Ed 10 and you suspect water got onto the drive board, keep the washer unplugged and find the leak first.
- Write down the full code, both the Ed and the number, and your model and serial number before you do anything else.
- Unplug the washer (or switch off its breaker) for a few minutes, then plug it back in. Every Ed code in Speed Queen's list says to unpower the machine to clear it.
- Take some clothes out if the tub was packed full, and with the washer unplugged and empty, check by hand that the drum turns freely.
- Make sure the washer is plugged straight into a properly grounded outlet of the right voltage, not an extension cord.
- Run a short cycle with a smaller load. If the same Ed code comes back, stop using the washer and call Speed Queen or an authorized service company, and tell them the exact code.
๐ When to call a pro
- Ed 29: check that the motor-to-drive-board harness is fully seated on both ends and undamaged; if it is, replace the harness or drive board as Speed Queen's table directs.
- Ed 23 and Ed 24: check that the drum and motor spin freely and measure continuity across motor phases L1 to L2, L2 to L3 and L1 to L3; they should be uniform. Replace the motor if they aren't, otherwise the drive board.
- Ed 10, Ed 12, Ed 13 and Ed 21: measure supply voltage against the machine's specification, inspect the power supply harness, and confirm dip switch 1 on the front-end control.
- Ed 22 and Ed 25: check for overloading and a binding drum, clean lint off the drive board heat sink, and on programmable commercial controls reduce very short agitation rotate and pause times.
- Ed 55 and Ed 56: inspect the heater thermistor and its wiring before replacing the drive board.
- Ed 44 to Ed 54, Ed 63 and Ed 64: replace the drive board if the error persists after power cycling.
Parts that commonly fix it
Always match the part number to your exact model.
