Speed Queen Washer FL Error Code (Er, FL): Fill Error, Water Level Not Reached (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)

Reviewed 2026-10-24 ยท Based on 1 manufacturer & service sources

What the code means

Speed Queen's error code master list for home and Homestyle washers (FB16-15) lists Er, FL as a Fill Error on both front-load and top-load models. On front loaders it means the fill level was not reached within 30 minutes in any fill step; on top loaders it means the desired fill level was not reached within 30 minutes. In both cases the control stops and the code stays until the washer is powered down, so unplugging it (or switching off its breaker) is what clears it. The control judges the water level with a pressure sensor connected to the tub by a small hose, so FL can also appear when water is coming in but an air leak in that sensor hose keeps the control from seeing the level rise. Don't confuse FL with two nearby codes: Er, nF (no water flow) means the front loader didn't reach about 4 inches of water in the first 5 minutes, which usually means almost no water is arriving at all, and Er, PS means the control isn't getting a valid signal from the pressure sensor. Speed Queen's list gives the supported water pressure as 20 to 120 psi (138 to 827 kPa).

Safe DIY checks

โš  Before you start

Turn off the water faucets before removing fill hoses, and unplug the washer before moving it far from the wall or opening any panel. Voltage checks at the water valve and output board involve live 120 V wiring, so leave them to a qualified appliance technician if you aren't trained for it.

  1. Make sure both the hot and cold faucets are turned all the way open.
  2. Pull the washer out carefully and check that neither fill hose is kinked, twisted or pinched against the wall.
  3. Turn the faucets off, unscrew the fill hoses at the washer and clean or replace the small filter screens. Reconnect the hoses snugly and turn the water back on, checking for leaks.
  4. Check your water pressure: if other faucets in the house run weak, especially at the same time, fix the supply problem first.
  5. Unplug the washer (or switch off its breaker) for about a minute to clear the Er, FL code, then start a short cycle and watch whether water flows in.
  6. If the faucets, hoses and screens are fine and the washer still fills slowly or not at all, call Speed Queen or an authorized technician with your model number and the exact code.

๐Ÿ›  When to call a pro

  • Check for 120 V from the output board to the water valves using the model's schematic. If voltage is present at the board, check for 120 V at the valve; if the valve has voltage and still won't open, replace the mixing (inlet) valve, as Speed Queen's master list directs.
  • If no voltage leaves the output board when the valve should be on, check the harness and connectors, then the output board or control.
  • Inspect the pressure sensor hose for air leaks, kinks, clogs or a loose fitting, and confirm the sensor harness is connected, since a leak in that hose can keep the control from reading the water level.
  • Confirm supply pressure is within 20 to 120 psi (138 to 827 kPa) at the washer.
