Speed Queen Washer L1 Error Code (Er, Ll): Lid Did Not Lock (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)
What the code means
In the Speed Queen top-load washer User's Guide (Alliance Laundry Systems part no. 203967), the troubleshooting table lists Er, Ll on the digital display as "This code indicates that the lid has not locked." The guide's steps are to make sure the lid is closed all the way and try to start the cycle, open the lid or unplug the machine to clear the code, and call for service if it continues. These washers lock the lid before agitating and spinning: the Lid Lock status light flashes while the washer is trying to lock and stays lit whenever the lid is locked, and clicking near the lid is the lock engaging. That's why the tub may fill but the washer won't go any further when Ll shows. Speed Queen uses a few look-alike lid codes, so read the second part carefully: Er, Lo means the lid was sensed open during a running cycle, Er, LL means the lid unlocked during a running cycle (both cleared by unplugging), and Er, LU means the lid won't unlock (unplug for three minutes to release it, and call for service if it comes back). Some websites say L1 means low supply voltage, but that isn't in the Speed Queen user's guide or the Speed Queen error code master list we checked, so treat that meaning as unconfirmed.
Likely causes
- The lid isn't fully closed, often because clothing, a towel or debris is caught under the lid or around the latch and hinges.
- A bent lid or hinge, usually from something heavy set on the lid, so the lid's latch doesn't line up with the lock.
- A lid lock that is binding or worn out, or a broken latch piece.
- A loose or damaged wire or connector between the lid lock and the washer's control.
- Less often, a faulty main control that isn't driving the lock or reading its switch correctly.
Safe DIY checks
The lid lock is a safety part that keeps hands and clothes out of the basket while it spins. Never bypass it or tape the lid switch. Unplug the washer before removing the console or touching any wiring, and leave electrical tests and part replacements to a qualified appliance technician if you're not comfortable with them.
- Open the lid and look all around the opening, the latch and the hinges for clothing or anything else in the way. Close the lid firmly and press Start again.
- Watch the Lid Lock status light. It flashes while the washer is trying to lock and stays on once it's locked. Listen for the click of the lock near the lid.
- Open the lid or unplug the washer to clear the code. If you unplug it, wait about 15 seconds before plugging it back in.
- Check that the lid sits flat and lines up with the latch. If the lid or a hinge is visibly bent, it needs replacing before the lock can catch reliably.
- Don't force or pry the lid, and never bypass the lid lock or lid switch; Speed Queen's guide warns against it.
- If Er, Ll keeps coming back with the lid properly closed, stop using the washer and call Speed Queen or an authorized service company with your model number and the exact code.
๐ When to call a pro
- Check the lid lock mechanism and latch for binding, breakage or misalignment with the lid striker, and adjust or replace as needed.
- With the washer unplugged, inspect the lid lock harness and its connector at the main control for loose, burnt or damaged pins.
- Use the model's service test mode and wiring diagram to check the lid switch, lock switch and lock solenoid; replace the lid lock assembly if any part fails.
- If the lock and wiring test good and the code persists, the main control may not be driving the lock or reading the lock switch; replace it per the model's service instructions.
