Frigidaire Washer E41 Error Code: Door Open or Door Switch Problem (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)
What the code means
Frigidaire's front-load Washer Tech Data Sheet (137063900) lists E41 as "Control board thinks the door switch is open" and sends the technician to its door test. Sears PartsDirect lists E41 for Frigidaire digital-display front-load washers as "Control detects the door open." So E41 is about the door being seen as open, not about the lock itself failing. Nearby codes are different: the tech sheet ties E43 to a failed door locking device and E47 and E48 to the door PTC circuit, and Sears groups E43, E45, E48 and E4A as door lock circuit problems. This page covers Frigidaire front-load washers; Frigidaire top-load washers use their own code list.
Likely causes
- The door isn't fully closed, often because clothing or the door gasket is caught between the door and the opening
- A loose, bent or damaged door striker on the door, which the tech sheet says to check first
- A loose or damaged wiring connection between the door lock assembly and the control board
- A failed door switch inside the door lock assembly, the most common part-level fix according to Sears PartsDirect
- A wiring harness that wasn't reconnected properly after the door was reversed (the door's harness and lock are unplugged during a reversal)
- Less often, a console control board that misreads the door signal
Safe DIY checks
Always unplug the washer before touching the door lock, the striker screws or any wiring. Voltage checks at the control board are done with power on and are a job for a technician.
- Open the door and check that no clothing, sock or part of the gasket is caught in the opening, then close it firmly until it latches.
- Look at the door striker (the hook on the door that goes into the lock). If it's loose, tighten its screws; if it's bent or cracked, it needs replacing.
- Unplug the washer for a minute, plug it back in, close the door and start a cycle to see whether E41 comes back.
- If the door was recently reversed, unplug the washer and check that the wiring harness is plugged into the door lock and seated in its terminal cap the way Frigidaire's Use & Care Guide describes, and that the door latches securely when closed.
- With the washer unplugged, Sears PartsDirect says to check the harness connections between the door lock assembly and the control board, reconnect anything loose and replace a damaged harness.
๐ When to call a pro
- The door closes and latches firmly but E41 keeps coming back. Frigidaire's tech sheet has the technician measure voltage on the black/red wire at the J2 plug on the console control with power on: 0 volts means checking the door strike and then replacing the door switch assembly, and 120 volts means the console control board is the problem.
- The display shows E43, E47 or E48 instead, which point to the door lock or its PTC circuit rather than the switch.
- You'd need to remove the front panel or work near live 120 V wiring to reach the lock.
- The door won't unlock and there's water or laundry trapped inside.
