Whirlpool Washer F3 E1 Error Code: Water Level (Pressure Sensor) Can't Be Read (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)

What the code means

Whirlpool Product Help says the F3 E1 alert indicates the washer can't detect the water level, and that there may be an issue with the appliance control unit or associated wiring. The same reset guidance appears on Whirlpool's front-load F3 E1 page. Whirlpool's Technical Service Pointer W11766193 (for certain top-load washers and stacked laundry centers) explains that F3E1 is displayed when the main control detects an out-of-range pressure signal, and lists it together with the drain pump running continuously. The washer measures water level with a pressure sensor connected to the tub by a small air hose, so anything that blocks, disconnects or fools that signal can set the code. F3 E1 is not the same as a slow fill: when water simply arrives too slowly, Whirlpool washers show a long fill code (F8 E1) instead.

Likely causes

Safe DIY checks

⚠ Before you start

Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.

  1. Reset the washer: unplug it (or switch off its breaker) for 5 minutes, then plug it back in. Whirlpool lists this as the first step on both its top-load and front-load F3 E1 pages.
  2. Run a short cycle and watch it fill. If it fills normally and the code doesn't return, the reset cleared a one-time glitch.
  3. With the water supply off, check whether water trickles into the tub when the washer is off or idle. Whirlpool's service pointer lists a leaking water valve as a cause; a valve that leaks needs replacing.
  4. If you're comfortable removing the control console or top panel with the washer unplugged, find the small pressure hose that runs from the tub to the main control. Whirlpool's service pointer says to check that it isn't disconnected, pinched, kinked, plugged or leaking air.
  5. Disconnect the pressure hose from the main control and blow into it to clear water, suds or debris, as Whirlpool's service pointer describes, then reconnect it firmly and run a short cycle again.

🛠 When to call a pro

  • The code returns after a 5-minute reset and the pressure hose is clear and connected. Whirlpool's service pointer says the next step is replacing the main control, then calibrating the washer and running the Automatic Test. Those steps are in the model's technical manual and are best left to a technician.
  • The drain pump runs continuously along with the code. Whirlpool's service pointer ties the two together on some top-load and stacked models.
  • Your washer is one of the models in Whirlpool's service pointer W11766193 (for example WTW4855HW, WTW4955HW, NTW4516FW or WET4027HW within the listed serial ranges). The pointer was a Whirlpool-paid parts and labor program effective 2/12/2025 to 12/31/2025, so ask Whirlpool service whether any coverage still applies to your serial number.
  • Opening the console puts you near 120-volt wiring. If you're not comfortable with that, have a technician do it.

Parts that commonly fix it

Always match the part number to your exact model.

⚙

Washer pressure (water level) hose

For a hose that is cracked, hardened or won't seal. Match it to your washer's full model number.

⚙

Washer water inlet valve

Only if the valve lets water into the tub when the washer is off. Match it to your model number.

⚙

Washer main control board

Only after the hose, port and valve check out. On many models the pressure sensor is on this board; the washer needs calibrating after replacement.
