Frigidaire Oven F31 Error Code: Shorted Oven Temperature Sensor Circuit (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)

What the code means

Frigidaire's service data sheets for its electric ranges list F31 as a "shorted oven sensor probe circuit." The oven sensor is a resistance temperature detector (RTD) on the back wall of the oven cavity, and its resistance rises with temperature: Frigidaire's RTD chart shows about 1,000 ohms at 32°F and about 1,091 ohms at 75°F. When the control reads a resistance far too low (Frigidaire's corrective step uses less than 500 ohms at room temperature as the sign of a bad probe), or one of the sensor wires is shorted to the metal cabinet, it can no longer tell the oven temperature, so it sets F31 and shuts down the oven. F31's sibling, F30, means the opposite: an open sensor circuit (broken or unplugged probe or wire). Sears PartsDirect notes the same F30 and F31 codes appear on Kenmore ranges built by Frigidaire.

Likely causes

Safe DIY checks

⚠ Before you start

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before opening panels.

  1. Do a power reset: unplug the range for 30 seconds, or switch off its breaker if you can't reach the plug (that also turns off anything else on the same circuit). Frigidaire gives this reset for its sensor-probe code F30, and it's the same first step for F31.
  2. If F31 comes back, turn the oven off and leave the power off; the oven won't bake or broil reliably while the sensor circuit reads shorted.
  3. With power off and the oven cool, look at the sensor on the upper back wall of the oven cavity. Check that it's firmly mounted and its wires aren't crushed or burnt where they pass through the oven wall.
  4. If you're comfortable with a multimeter: with the range unplugged, unplug the sensor from its harness and measure across its two terminals. Near 1,080 to 1,091 ohms at room temperature is good; under 500 ohms means replace the sensor.
  5. Write down your model number (usually on a label on the oven frame when you open the door or storage drawer) before ordering a sensor; they're model-specific.

🛠 When to call a pro

  • Measuring the sensor circuit at the control's sensor connector (purple wires on the range Sears PartsDirect shows) for about 1,080 ohms at room temperature, then checking each sensor wire to the metal cabinet for an open reading (OL).
  • Finding and repairing any spot where the sensor harness is pinched against the cabinet, or replacing the harness if the sensor alone tests good but the full circuit doesn't.
  • Replacing the RTD sensor if it tests low or out of range against Frigidaire's RTD chart.
  • Replacing the electronic oven control only after the sensor and wiring both test good.

Parts that commonly fix it

Always match the part number to your exact model.

⚙

Oven temperature sensor (RTD probe)

The usual fix for F31. Match the part to your model number.
