Frigidaire Oven Error Code 45 (F45): Cooling Fan Speed Too Low (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)
What the code means
Frigidaire ranges and wall ovens with the newer PUX electronic oven control have a cooling fan with a tachometer (speed sensor) wire that reports back to the oven control. If the control sees the fan turning slower than it should, it stops and shows F45. Frigidaire's service data sheets for gas and electric ranges with the PUX control list F45 as cooling fan speed low in the upper cavity, with F47 meaning the same thing for the lower cavity on double ovens (microwave combination units show F45 for the lower cavity). The related F46 (F48 lower) means the fan speed is reading too high. The Frigidaire Professional range data sheets list the same F45 cooling fan speed too low definition. Because the cooling fan usually only runs while the oven is heating, the code often shows up a few minutes into baking rather than right away. Older Frigidaire controls (the F1X/F3X/F9X family) don't list F45, so if your oven is older and shows 45, check the tech sheet for your model before buying parts.
Likely causes
- Something blocking or dragging on the cooling fan blades, such as debris, grease buildup or a shifted panel or wire
- A loose or unplugged tachometer (speed sensor) wire at the fan or at the oven control, so the control can't see the fan turning
- A cooling fan motor that's worn out or failing and can't reach its normal speed
- Less often, a faulty oven control (relay board) that isn't powering the fan or reading its speed signal
Safe DIY checks
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before opening panels.
- Turn the oven off and reset it: unplug the range for 30 seconds, or switch its breaker off and back on (that resets everything else on that circuit too). Frigidaire recommends this for most error codes.
- Run the oven and listen. The cooling fan is the one that blows air out near the controls or the vent area, not the convection fan inside the oven. If you can't hear it, or it sounds rough, slow or noisy, the fan is the likely problem.
- If F45 comes back, note whether it's F45, F46 or F47 (upper vs. lower oven on a double oven) and get your model number from the label; parts are model-specific.
- If you're comfortable working on the appliance with the power off and gas shut off on a gas range, check that the cooling fan turns freely by hand and that its wires, including the small tachometer wire, are firmly plugged in. One owner on Appliantology fixed a Frigidaire GCFG3060BF that threw error 45 after 5 to 10 minutes by reseating loose tach wires.
- Don't keep using the oven while F45 is showing. The cooling fan protects the controls and wiring from oven heat.
🛠 When to call a pro
- Removing the panels needed to reach the cooling fan (on some wall ovens the unit has to be pulled from the cabinet) and checking the blades and air path for obstructions.
- Confirming the tachometer harness is connected at the fan and at the oven control, and checking the wiring for damage.
- Replacing the cooling fan if it's blocked-free, connected and still reads slow, which is Frigidaire's next step.
- Replacing the oven control only if a new fan doesn't clear F45.
Parts that commonly fix it
Always match the part number to your exact model.
Oven cooling fan motor
The usual fix for F45 once the blades and tach wiring check out. Match the part to your model number.
