Frigidaire Oven F10 Error Code: Thermal Runaway, Oven Running Too Hot (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)
What the code means
Frigidaire's own error-code guide calls F10 "Thermal Runaway" and says that on standard ranges and wall ovens it means the oven is detecting higher-than-normal temperatures, a built-in safety alert. Frigidaire's service data sheet for electric ranges with the ES 530 control is more specific: the control has sensed a potential runaway oven condition, and either the control has a shorted relay or the RTD sensor probe (the oven temperature sensor) may have gone bad. The same sheet notes that an open sensor or sensor wiring (code F30) can first show up as F10, because the control can't read the temperature and assumes a runaway. On Frigidaire ovens with a Stone-Baked Pizza mode, Frigidaire says F10 can simply be caused by the Pizza Shield sitting in the wrong rack position.
Likely causes
- Pizza Shield in the wrong rack position during Stone-Baked Pizza mode (Frigidaire says rack position 7 on many models; check your Use and Care Guide)
- A failing oven temperature sensor (RTD probe) or a damaged sensor harness (Frigidaire service data sheets ES 330 and ES 530)
- An open sensor circuit that the control first reports as F10 before F30 (ES 530 service data sheet)
- A shorted relay on the electronic oven control (EOC), which keeps the elements heating no matter what the oven is set to (ES 530 service data sheet)
Safe DIY checks
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before opening panels.
- Turn the oven off and let it cool completely before doing anything else. Frigidaire treats F10 as a safety alert.
- If you were using Stone-Baked Pizza mode, check that the rack and Pizza Shield are in the position the manual calls for (rack 7 on many models), then reset and start the preheat again.
- Reset the power. Frigidaire says to unplug the range or switch off its breaker for 30 seconds, then restore power. The breaker may also cut other things on the same circuit.
- After power comes back, watch the oven. If it starts heating on its own with no cooking mode set, or feels much hotter than it should, switch the breaker off again and leave it off.
- If F10 returns, Frigidaire says to contact them for service; for ranges installed within the last 30 days, it says to go back to your installer first.
🛠 When to call a pro
- The oven heats with nothing selected, or keeps heating after power is reapplied. Frigidaire's service data sheets say to disconnect power and, if it still overheats when power is restored, replace the electronic oven control.
- A technician checks the oven temperature sensor and its harness first. Frigidaire's ES 530 sheet lists about 1,000 ohms at 32°F and about 1,091 ohms at 75°F; a reading well off that chart, an open circuit, or a short to the oven case means the sensor or wiring needs replacing.
- If the sensor and wiring check out and F10 persists, the control board is next. Frigidaire's ES 330 sheet warns that severe overheating can damage the oven badly enough that the whole unit may need replacing.
- Any sign of scorching, melted wiring or a burning smell. Leave the breaker off until it's inspected.
Parts that commonly fix it
Always match the part number to your exact model.
