Frigidaire Washer E2 Error Code: Water Takes Too Long to Drain (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)

Reviewed 2026-10-23 · Based on 7 manufacturer & service sources

What the code means

Frigidaire's support article defines Error Code E2 on top-loading washers as water taking too long to drain or not draining properly, and notes that some washers display it as code 2. The Use & Care guide for these top loaders (A29259301) puts a number on it: the drain error appears when the unit takes more than 10 minutes to drain, and it points you to the "does not drain or spin" troubleshooting. That guide's code column is printed as images, so the row is matched to E2 by its position right after the long-fill (E1) row and by its description matching Frigidaire's E2 article. The lid matters too: Frigidaire says the washer will not spin unless the lid is closed, so an open or unlatched lid can leave water in the tub. On the installation side, Frigidaire's drain requirements call for a standpipe at least 1-1/4 inches across, no more than 96 inches high, with an air gap around the hose; a hose taped or sealed tightly into the standpipe can stop the washer from draining. The minimum standpipe height varies by model (Frigidaire's installation sheets list 33 or 39 inches, and the Use & Care guide says 36 inches), so check the instructions for your model.

Likely causes

Safe DIY checks

⚠ Before you start

Unplug the appliance (or switch off its breaker) and shut off the water supply valves before removing panels or disconnecting hoses. Keep towels handy for residual water.

  1. Check the washer's circuit breaker or fuse, the first step in Frigidaire's E2 article.
  2. Close the lid firmly and press Start/Pause to resume the cycle. The washer won't spin with the lid open.
  3. Pull the washer out carefully and follow the drain hose. Straighten any kinks, especially where it bends behind the cabinet.
  4. Take the hose end out of the standpipe or laundry tub and check it for lint or socks blocking it. Clean it out before putting it back.
  5. If the hose is taped or sealed into the standpipe, loosen it so air can get in around the hose. Frigidaire says a snug fit can cause problems, and the standpipe needs to be at least 1-1/4 inches across and no more than 96 inches high.
  6. Run water into the standpipe or tub from a bucket. If it backs up, the house drain is clogged and needs a plumber, not a washer repair.
  7. Use the recommended amount of detergent. Frigidaire says too much can get in the way of draining.
  8. If the washer was installed or moved in the last 30 days, contact the installer, as Frigidaire advises.

🛠 When to call a pro

  • E2 keeps coming back after the hose, lid and standpipe all check out. Frigidaire says to schedule service at that point.
  • You hear the pump hum but no water leaves, or you hear nothing at all during drain. Either points to the drain pump or a clog in it.
  • Water stays in the tub after the cycle ends, or the drain and spin never happen. Frigidaire's guide lists a lid lock malfunction as a cause and says not to bypass the lid lock.
  • Checking or replacing the drain pump, which means draining the tub by hand and getting under the washer. iFixit's Frigidaire top-load drain guide walks through it, including checking the pump's wiring to the control board; unplug the washer first.
  • The washer is still under warranty. Schedule Frigidaire service instead of taking it apart.

Parts that commonly fix it

Always match the part number to your exact model.

⚙

Washer drain pump

The usual part when the hose, standpipe and house drain are all clear. Match it to the model number on your washer's tag.

⚙

Washer drain hose

Replace a cracked or crushed hose. Frigidaire says a longer hose should be installed by a qualified technician, matched to your model.
