GE Oven F97 Error Code: Lower Cooling Fan Running Too Slow (Meaning, Causes, Fixes)
What the code means
GE's public fault-code chart only says F97 "usually means that an internal component needs to be replaced." GE's own service guide for French Door single wall ovens (31-9241) is more specific: F97 is logged when "the speed of the lower fan is below the Min Fan Speed parameter for 30 seconds." Its sister code F96 is the same fault for the upper fan, and F98 and F99 are the upper and lower fans running too fast. On these ovens each cooling fan carries a small FAD (fan apparency device) board that works like a miniature tachometer and reports fan speed to the control, and the control shuts the oven down when the speed is out of range. The cooling fan keeps the outside of the oven and its electronics from overheating; per the same guide it runs during any cooking function and keeps running after the cycle until the oven drops below 170°F, and on high speed during self-clean. That's why the code often shows up partway into baking, broiling or self-clean rather than right at start-up. GE model code lists (seen through MyPros+ for models such as PT7050, PT7550 and PT9050) describe it the same way: lower cooling fan running too slow.
Likely causes
- Something blocking the lower cooling fan or a damaged fan wheel; GE's service guide says to check fan operation and make sure all the fins are on the fan
- A worn or failed lower cooling fan motor that no longer reaches its minimum speed (owners on AppliancePartsPros report clearing F97 on JK3500 and JT5500 double wall ovens by replacing the lower fan assembly)
- A bad FAD speed-sensor board on the fan, so the control can't see the fan turning even if it runs
- A loose or damaged wire or connector between the FAD board and the control
- A failed machine control (oven control board), which GE's guide says to replace only after the fan and sensor check out
Safe DIY checks
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before opening panels.
- Touch Clear/Off and let the oven cool completely before trying it again.
- Switch off the oven's circuit breaker for a minute or two, then turn it back on and run a short bake. GE's support page says a power reset sometimes clears F codes.
- Listen for the cooling fan while the oven heats; it normally runs during any cooking function. If the oven goes quiet and F97 returns about 30 seconds later, the lower fan isn't spinning up to speed.
- Make sure the vents around the oven and the cabinet cutout aren't packed with foil, towels or debris that could choke airflow.
- Don't keep cooking with F97 showing. The control shuts the oven down on purpose, because without the fan the electronics and cabinet can overheat. Leave the breaker off if it keeps coming back.
- Reaching the fan means pulling the wall oven out of the cabinet with the breaker off. GE's service guide says the oven must be removed from its installation to replace the fan, and that the FAD board moves from the old fan to the new one with a single T10 Torx screw. It's a heavy two-person job, so most owners hand it to a technician.
🛠 When to call a pro
- F97 keeps coming back after a breaker reset and a full cool-down.
- You'd need to pull the wall oven out of the cabinet to reach the fan; it's heavy and hard-wired.
- A technician can check the FAD board the way GE's guide describes: there are no resistance tests for it, only a 5 V DC pulse between pins 1 and 2 or pins 2 and 3 of its connector while the fan runs.
- The fan and FAD board both test good, which points to the machine control.
- The oven is under warranty; GE says a trained technician should diagnose its fault codes.
Parts that commonly fix it
Always match the part number to your exact model.
Lower oven cooling fan motor assembly
The most common F97 fix. Match the part to your exact model number; double ovens have separate upper and lower fans.

Holds the FAD speed-sensor board to the fan assembly, which moves over to a new fan.
[affiliate link slot: AFFILIATE_SLOT_TORX]Digital multimeter
For checking the 5 V DC pulse at the FAD board connector, with care, since the oven has to be powered for that test.

Only after the fan and FAD board check out, per GE's service guide.
